ROCK ON ! - A take on MOKSHA

This article was inspired by the thoughts and words of my former colleague and friend  GNP. And so the credit goes to him. I'm not a guy who is much keen on music nor what happens in the music scenario.But off lately i've been listening to an assorted collection of feel good kind off music and popular tunes, what ever language it may be! So thats the basic knowledge i have about music.

What made me write this articel is rather interesting than my interest in  music. Till then i had just known there existed a band called moksha(since i was from chennai) and thats all what i knew about it. It all started when a movie Rock on was released. Judging by the trailer, i knew this movie was good and well marketed and comparing with the other movies that released around that time, this was a comparitively good in all aspects. Also i had the perpetual habit of watching movies every weekend. So we(my partner gnp and myself,de movie buffs we're) decided to go for the sunday late night show. {trivia : it was the last night show we would be watching in surat, as my friend and myself would be relocating to chennai soon}

And so we were in the movie hall , wondering what this movie would be about and what does it offer for us audiences since it was equally hyped as farhan was debuting as an actor as well as the playback singer. Thankfully it was a pleasant surprise, the movie was really good film making, neatly packaged, well marketed,simple,friendly,emotional and appealing too. The backbone was the music and soundtrack. The script and screenplay seemed to be so real as in reel and i wondered if it were picked from realities of life.The latter reasoning being due to a disclaimer they had put up during the start  that the story is purely fictional, and any resemblance to living or dead is purely coincidental.

This made me wondering as well as pondering ,and left me clueless. So they might have lifted bits of ideas here there somewhere i wondered.Ohh! Forgot to mention the good performance of the cast and slick techincal work of the crew. The surprise was arjun rampal, as his performance was crisp and natural and it worked really well on scree.All departments had delivered promptly.

Now comes the shocker!! Meanwhile as all the above thoughts were running in an infinite loop in my mind, the friend who accompanied me was like that the events that conspire in the movie are based on the real life rock band  from chennai called moksha, and other bits of story might be from other local bands.This was truly revealing.

I was like..hmmmm, so this is how the formula worked in the movie perfectly.I could comprehend how the depth of story was so real as if it had happened really, and the credit goes to the director as well as producer . Thats how good stories are made, because they are real. And thats how i became more interested and this sudden urge in me to find more about moksha and as well learn about the indian rock music scenario. And i did learn much more about moksha as well as the shambles indian rock music was in then, but now it is comparitively better and favourable to rocker at present.

But comparing to present, when moksha was started around the nineties(i'm not sure of the date though) indigenious rock music was not popular with exception of international rockm music.Nobody even cared to bother about it or even developin it. It was a sad state of affairs.But time has gone by, things have changed now. Prospects seems to be much promising and brighter now than the past.Anyways whether it is yesterday, today or tomorrow, shitty music still remains, and they have cast a shadow over genuine likes of moksha and its bretheren, because people(big music publishing houses) who expect rock music to much,much,much and much better as said in the movie Rock On!

And one more thing, it is said as that MOKSHA  was the first acclaimed indian/asian rock band in the international rock music arena recogonized by the likes of IRON MAIDEN, Metallica amongst many others.

I sign off giving tribute Leon Ireland, vocalist and inspiration behind moksha, RIP Leon Ireland, beloved by all.
